Introduction

Peter Carl Faberge' (1846-1920) was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, the son of a jeweler and goldsmith. He trained there and in Dresden, entering his fathers business in the mid- 1860s. By 1872 he had assumed management of the firm, which soon began to receive the petronage of the Russian imperial court and Romanov kinsmen at the courts of England, Denmark, and Germany. Together with his brother and four sons, Faberge' established himself as a designer and manufacturer of some of the world's most appealing precious objects. In 1887 the flourishing business required the opening of a second manufactory and retail establishment in Moscow, with shops later added in Odessa, Kiev, and London.

Faberge' himself did not make any of the objects that bear his name. A superb organizer, he oversaw the design studio while delegating production to a series of gifted workmasters. At its height, the firm employed up to 500 individuals and produced more than 150,000 objects for a clientle that came from as far away as Thailand and the United States. The onset of World War I ended the Russian age of inperial extrvagance; the October Revolution of 1917 and the slaughter of the imperial family forced the Faberge' firm to close. Faberge' himself fled to Switzerland in 1918. He died there in 1920.
